REQUIREMENTS OF A LEVEL 5 DIVING COACH

Criteria

The Level V Coach represents the highest level of technical expertise of diving coaching in Canada. A coach of this caliber would typically have had a great deal of proven international success and would have placed and maintained athletes on the National Senior team. Through the certification process, and accumulated practical experience, a coach of this caliber will have the skill and expertise to coach and manage Canada’s senior international level divers at major international competitions. The Level V Coach will have attained and exhibited all the Level IV practical skills and requirements, as well as:

  • Manage and coach a National Senior team to a major international competition;
  • Produce, maintain and improve an “A” carded athlete (AAP Program) for a minimum of two (2) years.
Prerequisites
  • Candidate must be certified at Level IV NCCP
  • Candidate must have coached an athlete who competed at the Senior National Championship/Trials within the last five (5) years
  • Candidate must provide the appropriate application information (supplied by Diving Canada), including a resume and three (3) letters of reference (with at least one from a recognized Level IV/V Diving Canada Coach)
  • Candidate must pay the required yearly “admission” fee
  • Candidate must be a member in good standing with Diving Canada
Course Requirements

The Level V program consists of eight (8) tasks developed by the Coaching Certification Committee and approved by the Coaching Association of Canada. The tasks are often completed in conjunction with Level IV tasks, but, are based moreso on accumulated knowledge and experience rather than the attainment of such knowledge through sport specific tasks.

Evaluation

The candidate must successfully complete or exhibit all requirements for the eight (8) Level V tasks to the satisfaction of the Coaching Certification Committee.

The candidate must successfully attain the Practical requirements for Level V by producing the appropriate level divers.

LEVEL IV/V TASKS

1. Energy Systems - plan, conduct and evaluate a training program to meet the energy demands of high performance divers.

2. Strength Training for Elite Athletes - plan, conduct and evaluate a strength training program for high performance divers.

3. Sport-Specific Performance Factors - plan, conduct and evaluate a training program for additional performance factors specific to high performance divers (as determined by the CADA Coaching Certification Committee).

4. Nutrition for Optimal Performance - plan and manage nutritional requirements for high performance divers.

5. Environmental Factors and Performance - adapt training programs for high performance divers according to the influence environment has on both training and performance.

6. Recovery and Regeneration - plan, conduct and evaluate a recovery program for high performance divers.

7. Psychological Preparation for Coaches - psychological preparation for diving coaches.

8. Psychological Preparation for Elite Athletes - plan, conduct and evaluate a psychological preparation program for high performance divers.

9/11. Practical Coaching: Skill Training/Practical Coaching: Strategy & Tactics - plan, conduct and evaluate a variety of practical coaching sessions involving skill training appropriate to high performance divers.

10. Biomechanical Analysis of Advanced Skills - analyze biomechanically the theories of advanced technical diving skills.

12. Planning & Periodization - integrate physiological, psychological, technical and tactical factors into an annual periodized training program for high performance divers.

13. Analyzing Performance Factors - exhibit the technical expertise regarding the execution of all diving movements, and to be able to effectively relate appropriate information to senior high performance divers regarding execution.

14/15. Practical Coaching: Training Camps/Practical Coaching: Competitive Tour - demonstrate the ability to function as a technical administrator regarding the organization, development and implementation of an international tour, training camp and related technical projects in which the international coach is responsible.

16. Athlete Long-Term Development - to exhibit effective talent identification skills and provide appropriate recommendations for the development of training programs for identified future high performance senior divers.

17. Leadership Skills - demonstrate coaching leadership skills.

18. Self-awareness and Personal Management - enhance coaching performance:

  • Exhibit the ability to communicate effectively to the individual high performance diver in order to maximize and effect the greatest change possible in the shortest period of time;
  • To exhibit the ability to prepare and maximize a diver’s talent on a socio-psychological basis;
  • To exhibit the ability to evaluate the state of health of each individual diver and show the ability to develop and administer a program of readiness with the help of related para-medical staff throughout the diver’s career.

19. Canadian Sport System - understand the current Canadian Sport System.

20. National Team Program - plan, implement and evaluate the development of the National Team Program.
