Practical, Portfolio and Evaluation

Athletes Results

For full certification, the candidate must have at least one athlete achieve the National level status (national standard).

Competition observations

During a Provincial or National competition, an evaluation will be done by an Evaluator without the candidate knowing. Following the competition, the Evaluator will provide feedback to the coach.

This evaluation is made on the following general aspects:

  • Ethics
  • Technical Aspects
  • Teaching
  • Mental Preparation

Mentorship

The candidate may choose a higher level coach to assist and guide the candidate in preparation for the certification process.

Emphasis will be placed on ethical decisions, techniques, plan a practice and program.

Time in Diving = 200 hours

The evaluation also includes:

  • Preliminary Book (mandatory)
  • Coach’s Workbook (mandatory)
  • Video OR Evaluator visit (mandatory)

Preliminary book & Coach Workbook (mandatory)

The Preliminary book is sent to each candidate about two weeks before the course. The coach must complete it before the first day of the clinic. The candidate has to show it to the conductor before the course.

During the clinic, the candidates will complete each section of the Coach Workbook. Once complete, both Workbooks are to be submitted to their provincial diving federation within one month of the course.

Any delay must be justified to the Certification Committee.

Example: Clinic from 6 to May 9 - you must return the 2 books before June 9.

Video OR Evaluator’s visit (mandatory)

The candidate must arrange for a visit by the Evaluator at a practice. Depending on the Evaluator availability and location, a video and submission could replace the Evaluator’s visit. The Evaluator will then evaluate those items with a checklist.

The following items are required.

  • Practice plan (must be submitted to the Evaluator prior to the evaluation)
  • Equipment maintenance
  • Diving Emergency Action Plan (DEAP)
  • Warm up example
  • Training example (practice)
  • Examples of the 3 skills chosen to be evaluated under Analyse Performance
Learning Outcomes

Outcome # 1. Make Ethical Decisions --- CAC web evaluation

Drawing on the values and philosophy of the NCCP and on the Code of Conduct of Canadian diving coaches, the coach shall reflect upon an ethical issue that pertains to his or her own situation, identify its cause, and describe how he or she would deal with that issue.

Emphasis shall be placed on the 6 steps of Ethical Decision-Making Process and the code of conduct for Canadian coaches and divers.

Evaluation : Made by CAC – Web evaluation

Outcome # 2. Plan a Practice

The coach shall develop a series of safe, dynamic, fun and varied sessions that offer activities that are suited to the age group of the participants, and that contribute to the improvement of their general competitive skills.

Emphasis shall be placed on water safety and planning sessions within a season as well as on the development of objectives.

Outcome # 3. Design a Sport Program

A sport program is a planned and progressive sequencing of activities. The nature (training, competition, etc.), number, frequency, duration, and content of these activities are adapted to the participants ' age and sport experience. The goal of the program is to foster the participants ' athletic development and sport form over time.

Emphasis shall be placed on the Sport type : Technico - Artistic .

Outcome # 4. Plan Equipment Maintenance – Use Trampoline Belt

Knowledge and proper usage of diving-specific equipment. Plan for efficient diving equipment maintenance. Be aware of Risks – make sure everything is SAFE !!

Emphasis will be placed on the different skills on trampoline and work with belt.

Trampoline skills (Belt)

The minimum standards for the rhythm jumps (control), somersaults (102-402-202-302) are to assist with control and safety of an athlete younger than 18 years old.

The minimum standards for the other abilities (101-401-201-301-103-403-203-303) are to assist with control and safety of an athlete younger than 13 years old.

Outcome # 5. Analyze Performance

Starting with a diving-specific framework analysis, the coach shall identify those elements of participant/athlete performance that require improvement, and shall prescribe a package of corrective measures designed to enhance performance.

Emphasis will be placed on the study of diving movements and on the relationship between correction and safety.

Three skills will be selected by the Evaluator for analysis: one with which the candidate feels comfortable and one with which he/she does not feel comfortable. A third skill to be evaluated will be selected at random by the Evaluator.

Outcome # 6. Provide Support to Athletes in Training

Teaching and Learning

Focus on the teaching process, and on specific aspects and skills that relate to what you do when you are with your athletes in a practice session. Another important topic is self esteem of the athletes.

Emphasis will be placed on the different types of teaching and motor learning.

Outcome # 7. Provide Support to Athletes in a Competitive Experience

The coach must demonstrate that he/she is able to manage athletes who are in their initial stages of competition and able to offer them the support they need.

Mental Preparation

Coaches will learn tools to help with the mental preparation of their athletes. Key areas that will be addressed in this introductory document on mental preparation are: Focus management strategies - Anxiety management strategies - Goal setting - Planning for mental preparation

Nutrition

Assess the quality of the athletes’ nutrition and hydration prior to, during and after a training session or competition and propose a number of suggestions or corrective measures, as required. Reflect on ways to be a positive influence on the parents and the athletes in order to ensure that a number of the guiding principles of sport nutrition are respected.
