As shown in the NCCP Overview, there are three streams of coaching: Community, Instruction and Competition. Diving has incorporated only the Instruction and Competition streams, as these two relate to diving’s programming.

The following is a summary of Diving’s coach programming:

*Note: not all provinces have updated their provincial standards with the new NCCP.

Trained vs. Certified

Following completion of a coach clinic in a specific context, the coach will receive “trained” status in the NCCP Database.

Following successful evaluation, the coach will receive “certified” status in the NCCP Database. This includes successful completion of all of the evaluation methods which may include: coach workbook, written assignments, tests, and on-site practice and/or competition evaluations – methods vary by course.

NOTE: Diving coaches who choose to take the multi-sport modules offered through their provincial section (for example, Introduction to Competition A & B), will be considered trained after the completion of these modules. Coaches can only become certified in a given context through the national sport body. Therefore, all diving coaches must go through DPC for sport-specific training and evaluation in order to become certified.

Professional Development

A key principle of the NCCP is to reinforce the value of continuous learning. Under the CAC Professional Development Policy (to be approved shortly), certified coaches in any of the above contexts will need to renew their certification every five years in order to maintain “active” status.

To renew certification, coaches can choose from a variety of professional development opportunities, as follows:

  • Coaches earn credits, over the five year period, from development opportunities:
    • Instruction-Beginner – 20 points required
    • Competition-Introduction – 20 points required
    • Competition-Development – 30 points required
  • A wide variety of opportunities is available. If there are specific items not listed below that a coach is interested in pursuing, he/she may apply through the DPC National Office to earn credits:
    • Each year of active coaching is worth 1 point, to a maximum of 5 points in a five year period
    • Completing evaluation is worth 100% of the points in that context
    • NCCP activities – 5 points each
      • Modules can be taken separately, eg. Fundamental Movement Skills, Making Ethical Decisions, Coaching and Leading, etc. Each module in a context is worth 5 points.
    • Non-NCCP activities – 1 point/hour to a maximum of 3 points
      • E.g. DPC Technical Congress at the AGM; Sport Leadership Conference seminars; Coaches Retreats, training camps where coach development is a goal (each camp will be evaluated to see how many “activities” in total are included), LF and evaluator training, officiating development, etc.
  • Coaches with certification in two or more contexts will need to obtain credits based on the context with the highest number of points, e.g. if both Comp-Intro and Comp-Dev certified, then will need to obtain 30 points. If only 20 points is achieved, then certification will be renewed in Comp-Intro and not in Comp-Dev.

TRANSFER POLICY- OLD LEVELS NCCP TO NEW

Coaches in the old Levels NCCP will be transferred to the new NCCP. While this is subject to final approval by CAC, the proposed plan for Diving is:

Competition-Development Requirements

Pre-Requisites for Competition-Development

Coaches who wish to participate in Diving’s Competition-Development Course must complete the following pre-requisites:

1. Full certification in the following Competition-Introduction Modules:

  • Making Ethical Decisions (on-line certification)
  • Plan a Practice
  • Design a Sport Program
  • Performance Analysis (including trampoline belt)
  • Training in the following Multi-Sport Competition-Development Modules:
    • Coaching and Leading Effectively
    • Conflict Resolution
    • Leading Drug-Free Sport (Doping)
    • Psychology of Performance
    • Prevention and Recovery
  • Recommendation from their Provincial Sport Organization

A maximum of 10 participants will be accepted into the program each year. This is to ensure a quality program with sufficient personal attention for each coach. Keeping numbers down also ensure quality in the extensive evaluation required to become certified. From a provincial perspective, funding is a limiting factor, so 1-2 participants per province is likely all that each province can budget for each year. The 10 participants selected will be based on provincial distribution as well as the specific coaching context of the coaches applying.

Acceptance into the Competition-Development Program

In order to be accepted into the program, coaches must commit to attending both weekend courses and fully participating in all activities therein. The fee for the course includes both weekends of training and evaluation. Payment is required in advance and no refunds will be given after the first weekend, whether or not the coach completes the course. Coaches are responsible for their own transportation, hotel and meal costs. Diving Plongeon Canada will help the coaches find partners to room with and do its best to secure group rates at the host hotels.

Once accepted, all coaches must submit a Pre-Course Submission that is due one month before the start of the first weekend. The purpose of the Pre-Course Submission is to familiarize the Facilitators with the coaches in the course, their specific coaching contexts and their understanding of a variety of topics coming into the course. It’s quite comprehensive as an introduction to the topics that will be covered during the course. This is required, but NOT a test! Candidates are not evaluated on their answers.

Competition-Development Course

Coaches participating in Diving’s Competition-Development Course must complete and be evaluated in all 10 modules.

Due to the extremely sport-specific requirements of training diving coaches, Diving Plongeon Canada has elected to create an intensive program consisting of two three and a half day weekends followed by tests and written assignments as well as an on-site practice evaluation and an on-site competition evaluation. The 5 modules included in the two weekend courses have been written and/or extensively adapted to target diving’s sport-specific needs. The remaining 5 modules must be completed by the participants through the provinces on the participants’ own time. These modules are multi-sport in context and have been outsourced in order to keep the costs of the program down, as well as to make sure that all modules are facilitated as expertly as possible.

Multi-Sport Modules

    • Coaching and Leading Effectively
    • Conflict Resolution
    • Leading Drug-Free Sport (Doping)
    • Psychology of Performance
    • Prevention and Recovery

These modules are to be taken BEFORE the diving-specific course weekends and are considered pre-requisites to the course. (Note: there will be some allowance in the first 2 years of the program as provincial sections get organized in offering these courses.)

Diving-Specific Modules

  • Developing Athletic Abilities
  • Analyze Performance
  • Plan a Practice
  • Manage a Sport Program
  • Performance Planning
  • Prevention and Recovery (diving-specific follow-up to multi-sport course)

Coaches are considered IN TRAINING once they are accepted into the program and have started the process outlined above.

Coaches are considered TRAINED once they have completed all five multi-sport seminars and both weekend training courses with Diving Plongeon Canada.

Coaches are considered CERTIFIED once they successfully complete all evaluations including in-course test, written assignments, practice evaluation and competition evaluation as well as meet the practical requirement (based on athlete performance).

In order to MAINTAIN CERTIFICATION, coaches are required to successfully complete the required amount of professional development every 5 years.

In the future, there will be opportunities to upgrade certification within the Competition-Development context to Master and Expert levels.

Competition-Development Evaluation

Coaches participating in the Course must complete and be evaluated in all 10 modules. The evaluation process cannot begin until the coach has completed training ALL 10 of the multi-sport and diving-specific modules. All outcomes must be successfully evaluated in order to become certified.

Multi-sport modules are evaluated through the provinces. Ideally, a coach will have successfully completed training in all of the multi-sport modules before attending the two diving-specific weekend courses.

Diving-specific modules (and some aspects of the multi-sport modules) are evaluated through an extensive process that will take coaches 8-12 months to complete; including

Weekend 2 Test

  • Written Test
  • Video Analysis

Written Assignments & Projects

  • Take-Home Written Assignment
  • Pre-Competition Submission
  • Travel Planning Project
  • Yearly Training Plan

Coaching Evaluations

  • Practice Evaluation (at coach’s home pool)
  • Competition Evaluation

Evaluation times are set to least affect coaches at major events, and ideally will take place at the same time every year for consistency. An estimate timeline is as follows.
