Transfers from old to new NCCP

December 2009

As you may know, the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) began transitioning to a new National Coach Certification Program (NCCP) a few years ago. This transition moves the NCCP from a levels-based (pre-level 1, and levels 1 through 5) to a new, competency-based context system. These new contexts are outlined in Appendix 1 attached.

Diving Plongeon Canada has programs in two of the three new contexts. Clinics in Diving in the old levels-based NCCP are no longer given, with the exception of Levels 4/5. These too will be changed to a new context in the coming years.

A lengthy process of input and feedback was conducted by CAC, following which a Policy on Recognition of Levels-NCCP Coach Qualifications was approved in June 2008. This policy ensures that coaches in the old levels-based NCCP receive recognition for their coach education and experience in the new NCCP, as all coaches will be transferred to an equivalent context in the new NCCP. The new NCCP also reinforces the Making Ethical Decision module as a cornerstone of the NCCP.

For database purposes, the old levels qualification that coaches have will not disappear, but rather will be “retired”.

This transfer process to the new NCCP applies to all sports, not just to the sport of diving. The transfers will not happen for all sports at the same time, and will not happen for each context at the same time. Transfers will only be undertaken as contexts receive final approval.

At this time Diving Canada has received final approval for the Competition-Introduction context. We anticipate receiving final approval for the Instruction-Beginner and Competition-Development contexts some time in 2010. The exact date the transfer will take place for Competition-Introduction has not yet been determined.

Transfers will apply only to those who have some level of training and/or certification in Pre-Level 1, Level 1 and Level 2. Although the policies for Levels 3, 4 and 5 will be developed at a later time, because coaches of this level also hold certification in levels 1 and 2, this transfer policy does apply to that portion of their certification.

What does this mean for you, the coach?

The chart below shows the equivalency that you will receive in the new NCCP.

Although you do not have to take any action for the transfers to be applied, all coaches who wish to maintain an active status must complete the Making Ethical Decisions (MED) on-line module within five years of the transfer taking effect. Certification cannot be granted in a context without completion of this module (note there may be other requirements you may need to complete depending on your current NCCP level).

The MED course can be taken through the provincial/territorial coaching associations, in class or home study, or can be taken as part of Diving’s Instruction-Beginner and Competition-Introduction clinics. Contact your local provincial diving association for information on upcoming clinics.

If you are actively coaching, or anticipate you may return to active coaching in the coming years, and you wish to have a certification level, then you will need to complete the MED module and possibly other steps to finalize your certification. “Trained” is a new option that will show in the database. Current and potential employers can help you determine which status is correct for you.

If you are not actively coaching and anticipate that you will not be returning to coaching, then your status in the database will automatically change to inactive in five years.
