State of Diving in the Province Diving in Alberta is small in numbers, but has experienced much success in 2005. We have a stable base of operations funding provided by the Province. Unfortunately, Gaming revenues have decreased significantly, so the Association has put a high priority on fundraising in order to meet our program goals. Alberta Diving plans to define our goals clearly, and begin working towards them within the current club development models. We want to lead by example, and demonstrate to ourselves and our community that we can challenge each other on the road to attaining our common goals. 2. Program Priorities Alberta Diving 2005 program priorities continued to include the maintenance and implementation of current programs, through which we have experienced many benefits. The Alberta Junior Provincial Team program has been a resounding success, with the spin-off benefit of being a club-level motivator for our divers. The Provincial Team gives our developmental divers the opportunity to learn to be part of a team, access coaching from other Provincial Team Coaches, and compete in different countries. This past year, the meet took place in Havana, Cuba. We continue to offer our Scholarship Fund to reward divers for their scholastic and athletic achievements. We hope that easing the financial burden of post-secondary education will allow our divers the opportunity to remain in Alberta. This program is our initial attempt at providing alternatives to those divers who may be considering a scholarship in the US. We have instigated a Speakers Bureau, whereby the divers go out into the schools in their communities and try to motivate their peers to get involved in diving. This program is new this fall, and the results will be tracked through registration numbers. 3. Club and Coach Development The current club development models are working and will continue to work within the Alberta Sport Plan mandate. Each club model has evolved to suit its objectives for development and to meet government requirements. There are 2 new Alberta Government coaching development programs called Above and Beyond and Coach Visitation. These programs will allow us to send our coaches out of province for training opportunities, and also to bring other coaches into Alberta to train our coaches. Coach development is a priority for Alberta Diving, and is one of the reasons that Alberta Diving has been so successful, despite our modest numbers. Alberta divers won the 2005 Canada Games Diving competition in Regina, and five out of six of our divers came home with gold medals. At the Age Group Nationals, we earned numerous medals and had 4 divers compete at Junior Pan Ams in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Reuben Ross and Herb Flewwelling earned the right to compete and coach respectively at the 2005 World Aquatic Championships held in Montreal. We hosted the 2005 World Masters Games in Edmonton in July, and Albertas divers won a total of 11 gold medals. Dive Calgary played host to the successful Canada/US Junior Challenge in May, 2005. Herb Flewwelling also won the prestigious Alberta Centennial Salute to Excellence award 4. Future Plans Each Alberta Provincial Sport Association is required to demonstrate progressive development in all programs, and expenditures of available funds must be shown. In order to qualify for future funding, we must strive towards expanding existing programs and implementing new and innovative programs. Albertas diving community must develop alternative income sources, to offset declining casino and bingo revenue. Our goal for the up-coming season is to expand our base, and this can only be done with strong and effective clubs. We must market the sport to Albertas youth at an age where they can succeed, before they dissolve into our current culture of inactivity. Our stars can sell the sport to our youth, and our coaches can in turn develop our future stars.
