This list does not represent a consensus on the points raised since not all athletes are of the same point of view or are affected by the same matters, rather it represents the key points raised that help identify areas where efforts can be invested to have the most positive impact on Canadian diving from the athlete’s perspective. Key Issues: National Team training camp. In the past two years there has not been a National Team training camp. Although there have been training camps for specific teams that have been selected, it seems that the opportunity has been missed to include all of the National Team members in a focused training environment. A National Team training camp has many potential benefits including: Developing and selecting synchro teams. An opportunity for athletes to learn from other coaches. An opportunity for coaches to learn from other coaches. Create a competitive environment for athletes to train during critical periods. Bring athletes who are training on their own together with other National Team divers and coaches. It seems that since most national team members train without other athletes who also compete in their events, it would be especially valuable to use training camps as a tool to strengthen our National Team. Competition Schedule Concerns Winter Sr. Nationals are too close to the Rostock Grand Prix and the Spanish GP. The Canadian Summer Championship conflict with the Italian Grand Prix. Although these scheduling conflicts do not exist this year, it seems very important that these competitions be considered in the future when scheduling Canadian Senior National events. Not only is this an issue for earning carding scores, but the FINA ranking is based on 4 meets, so this schedule puts our top athletes at a disadvantage compared to other countries in terms of earning FINA rankings. Outfitting This continues to be a weakness in our program when compared to other sports and other national teams. Areas where our outfitting could see improvement include: Too few bathing suits to last through a year. Unsuitable clothing dry-land training. The materials being used in the Canadian Speedo gear are very out of date and not necessarily suitable for on-deck dry-land training. Lack of outdoor apparel. The suggestion was made to speak with “Carbon” about high quality winter wear (Carbon is the outfitter of the Canadian Ski Team and several of the other winter sports). It seems that even countries with warm climates have superior cold weather outfitting than we do. This is an important issue from the perspectives of having appropriate team apparel for cold weather travel, for visibility as a team, and from a visibility and marketing perspective. “Canada” written somewhere on National Team jackets seems like it would be an appropriate addition – this is a matter of preference and visibility and is a suggestion that could be discussed since the current jackets do not have Canada written anywhere on them. Travel Arrangements: There was concern raised by a couple of athletes who had extreme layovers on their travel arrangement to Grand Prix meets. The request was made that there be more direct communication with the athletes or more attention to minimizing travel time. Synchro Team Selection: There was adamant concern raised about the selection method used for the synchro teams for the World Championships. Since other countries are taking this event very seriously, the point was raised that we should have a more comprehensive system in place to fairly select the strongest team possible. It is generally understood, however, that this is a complicated matter given the number of total athletes that can be included for all events. However, in spite of this, there were athletes that felt that they had not been treated fairly in the selection process that was used to choose the synchro teams for World Championships in Montreal. Injury Card: The question was raised about injury cards. Although there is provision through Sport Canada for an injury card for “B” carded athletes, is there any provision available for “C” carded athletes who missed a season due to an injury sustained from diving? Retired Athlete Recognition: Echoing the point that has been brought to attention in past reports, there is a significant gap in our current system which fails to develop the Canadian Diving Community: Former athletes are not being recognized upon their retirement. Not only does this fail to build the diving community, it leaves some athletes feeling that they have left a very significant piece of their lives behind without any word of appreciation for the years of work and commitment as a part of Canadian diving. Junior Rep Comments – Roseline Filion: Junior Nationals: There was concern about the following. Limited deck space and having to use a separate warm up area before events. The schedule did not allow for enough time between events to warm up – allowing athletes only time for a couple of dives before some events. Junior Pan Ams: There was very positive feedback from the athletes. “Nancy was great during the hurricane. We had a lot of things to do to not get bored.” “The whole competition was great and we had a blast. It was a little windy!!! But everyone had fun!” FISU Games: FISU Games continues to be an extremely well organized event with very strong participation from other countries. The most considerable improvement with regards to this event would have been to be better prepared for the synchro events. Synchro continues to be an increasing priority at many major competitions and some other countries seem to be outpacing Canada in terms of preparation for these events. A suggestion to improve on synchro preparation for this event would be to have the athlete’s rendez-vous for a few days in Canada to train together and prepare the synchro teams before traveling abroad. World Championships: World Championships was obviously an extremely successful event. Hosting the event in Montreal was obviously very important to the athletes and all of the hard work that came together to make it possible was very appreciated. Thank you to the organizers and administration involved in bringing the Championships back to Montreal and to all of the volunteers from the diving community that made this such an outstanding event. Closing Remarks: As a committee we have had very good participation in identifying key matters to help identify areas where efforts can be made to continue to build on Diving Canada’s success. The upcoming year holds much promise and it will be exciting to see the developments that continue to build over the next few years.
