Diving Alumni Newsletter – October 2009

Sadly, we lost two very important members of our Diving community this past August. Sue Bulmer, mother of Eryn, Christie, and Matthew, passed away August 29, having fought a valiant battle against ovarian cancer for several years. Sue was a wonderful Diving volunteer in Edmonton, and a strong loving supporter of her children, grandchildren, and husband Derek. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her in our community and Skate Alberta where she had been the Executive Director in recent years.

John Dickenson passed away August 28 at the age of 82 in Bancroft Ontario, near the cottage on Graphite Lake in Maynooth where he, his wife of 54 years Elsie, and sons Alan and David, spent their summers. John was the patriarch of the Etobicoke Diving Club, and I’m sure many alumni will have great stories to remember of John during his many years in Diving.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Bulmer and Dickenson families.

It was great to hear from Ian Moss who is the relatively new (6 months now) Performance Director for Badminton England. Kim and the two Moss children, Sarah (17) and Geordie (14) have stayed in Victoria BC while Sarah finishes high school this year. Ian tries to get back to Victoria every 6-8 weeks. He will have a bird’s eye view of London’s preparations for the 2012 Summer Olympics. Good luck to Ian in his new job.

Interestingly, Donna Atkinson took over Ian’s ED role at Rowing Canada, so that the Diving connection is maintained there! Donna’s partner Glen Music is doing well in the mortgage and building business on Vancouver Island.

Many thanks to Shaun Panayi (Territory Manager, RHSports in Australia) who wrote the following in the early summer “Recently I was in Tasmania for work and managed to catch up with Liz Jack and Andrew Quick for dinner......no doubt Liz would be familiar to many of your "readers" maybe not so Andrew. He spent time in Canada at Point Claire in maybe 1979 or thereabouts. The only thing missing from the night was Julie Kent - another name familiar to Canadian diving - what was it with Tasmanian divers going to Canada in those days?? She could not make it on the night as her step-mum had passed away just a few days before. Anyway, it was great to catch up - we worked out that it was about 20 years since we had seen each other!! Good food (Indian), good beer (Cascade) and great conversation - many familiar diving names from the past bought up in the chat - Don Webb (poker got a mention here too!!), The Fullers, John Nash, Sylvie Bernier, Randy Sageman, Barb Bush, Mitch Geller and many more - lots of reminiscing!! Liz and I found each other on Facebook which is a great to way to catch up with some old diving names too...can thoroughly recommend it! Look me up if you know me and are not on my "Friends List"!! And gidday to all from Down Under!”

Congratulations to ..... Jason Napper and his wife Teri on the birth of their 2 nd son Kael on August 4.

As many of you know, Herman and I lost our home in a forest fire in Halifax last May. We are moving forward, and at the end of this month we will become the proud owners of a home on the Rideau River in Merrickville ON, 45 minutes southwest of Ottawa. There’s lots of room for company for those of you who may be passing through Ottawa in the future.

Till next time!
