In 2008, at the age of just 16, Jennifer Abel became one of the youngest divers in Canadian history to secure an Olympic berth for Canada and represent her country at the Olympic Games.
The Laval native, who started diving in 1996, broke onto the international scene in 2006 by competing in her first Senior Grand Prix and by winning the bronze medal on 3-metre at the FINA World Junior Diving Championships. In 2007, at the Pan-American Junior Diving Championships, this CAMO diver brought home double gold on 3-metre and 3-metre synchro with Meaghan Benfeito, the same partner she set the national record with in this event.
In 2008, Abel captured her first career international medal in the senior ranks at the Spanish Grand Prix. This monumental achievement was a fitting start to what would become a stellar season: 13th at the Olympic Games, 11th at the FINA World Cup, an invitation to participate on the prestigious FINA World Series, a silver medal at the FINA World Junior Championships, and winning her first national title at the Winter Senior National Championships. At the Speedo Junior National Championships, in addition to winning the gold medal, Abel also set a new Group A national record on the 1-metre with 494.20 points.
Jennifer had an impressive 2009 season on the national and international levels. In domestic competition, she captured two national championships, and on the FINA Grand Prix circuit, she collected a pair of bronze medals.
2010 was another year of high finishes for Jennifer. Pairing up with Canadian diving legend, Emilie Heymans, the duo reached the podium on the FINA Grand Prix, World Series, and World Cup.
The highlight of Jennifer’s 2010 campaign was her strong showing at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi. She narrowly missed sweeping gold in all three springboard events (2 gold and 1 silver), but firmly established that she is a force to be reckoned with.
2011 has been a dominant year for Jennifer. She won 17 medals in 20 events, in competitions on both the national and international level. Jennifer did not miss a single podium on the 3-metre event all season, an incredible feat for any diver.
With her two medals at the FINA World Aquatic Championships, Jennifer secured Canada spaces in both the 3-metre and 3-metre synchro events at the 2012 Olympic Games.
Jennifer closed out the 2011 season with a successful showing at the Pan American games in Guadalajara. Together with Emilie, the pair brought home a silver medal for Canada on 3-metre synchro.
Upon returning from Mexico, Jennifer was named the 2011 Aquatic Federation of Canada’s female athlete of the year for. Jennifer is currently training hard as she builds toward the 2012 London Olympics.
