Alexandre showed a great deal of grit and determination in 2008. A few months prior to the Olympic Games, he was the unfortunate victim of a fractured right foot. The Laval native didn’t let this defeat him and he worked twice as hard to ensure he was fit for Beijing. His hard work certainly paid off when he was able to bring home the silver medal on 3 m. This was the second Olympic medal of his career, the first being the silver he won in 2004 on 3 m in Athens. With his first Olympic medal, Alexandre became the first Canadian man to win an Olympic medal in the history of diving. Alexandre now currently has sights set on the Games in 2012.
In 1998, at the age of 13, he captured the hearts of Canadians when he won the gold medal on tower at the Commonwealth Games.
Since then, other than his 44 national titles, he has accomplished what no other diver in history has. Cheered on by his hometown crowd in Montreal at the 2005 FINA World Aquatic Championships, Alexandre Despatie became the first diver to be crowned world champion on all three boards. The 24-year old earned a world championship on tower in 2003 in Barcelona before he secured the other two (1 m & 3 m) in Montreal.
Throughout his career, he has most notably won five medals at FINA World Cups, seven at Commonwealth Games, and five at Pan-American Games.
He still holds the majority of Canadian Senior Records (1 m, 3m, and 10 m) and in partnership with Reuben Ross set the national mark on 3 m synchro.
Alexandre was also named athlete of the year at the Canadian Sport Awards in 2005. This honour followed his 4 Junior Athlete of the Year awards from 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2002.
Despite struggling with injuries over the past two seasons, Alexandre managed to compete with the world's best divers and won a Silver medal at 2008 Olympics, and two Bronze medals at the 2009 World Championships. In 2010, we saw Alexandre regain his top form by winning a Gold and Silver medal on the prestigious FINA World Series. In his hometown of Montréal, at the 2010 Canada Cup FINA Grand Prix, Alex won two more Gold medals on 3-meter and 3-meter synchro with Reuben Ross.
At the 2010 Summer Nationals and Commonwealth Games trials, Despatie won Gold on both the 3-meter and 3-meter synchro with Reuben Ross. These wins booked his ticket for the Commonwealth Games to be held in New Delhi next October. Alex enters the Commonwealth Games as the two-time defending champion on both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboards.
