Roseline Filion was attracted to diving when she watched Annie Pelletier win the bronze medal on 3 m at the 1996 Olympic Games. Twelve years later, in 2008, the 21-year old Laval native fulfilled her own dream and competed at the Olympic Games in Beijing with her partner Meaghan Benfeito. The pair finished 7th on 10-metre synchro.
Much like Benfeito, Roseline Filion is excelling more and more in the 10 m individual event. In 2009, the communications student was crowned Canadian champion on 10-metre at the Winter Senior National Championships. On the 2009 FINA Grand Prix circuit, Filion won her first international individual medals by collecting the gold at the USA Grand Prix and silvers at the Canada Cup and German Grand Prix.
On the 10-metre synchro, Roseline Filion and Meaghan Benfeito picked up right where they left off after the 2008 Olympic Games by competing in all four stages of the 2009 FINA World Series, where they managed to bring home 2 silver and 1 bronze medal. During the FINA Grand Prix circuit, the Canadian champions also won 2 gold and 1 silver medals, totaling 6 international synchro medals to date in 2009.
In 2006, the duo from CAMO won the bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games and followed up that performance with a 4th place finish at the 2007 FINA World Aquatic Championships.
Filion and her longtime 10-metre synchro partner had a strong 2010 season. The pair managed to step on the podium at all events they entered, earning eight consecutive medals at the FINA World Series, Grand Prix, World Cup, and Canadian Championships. Individually, Filion placed second on 10-metre at the Summer Nationals and placed 4th at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
2011 saw continued success on 10-metre synchro for Filion. With five 10-metre synchro medals in her pocket, Roseline had a career best performance at the Canada Cup and won the 10-metre individual event, the single best result by any Canadian on tower for the season.
With her 8th place finish at the FINA World Aquatic Championships in Shanghai, Filion secured her invitation to compete on the 2012 FINA World Series and also qualified a spot for Canada on 10-metre at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
Roseline completed her 2011 season with a strong showing at the Pan American Games. She won bronze on 10 m synchro with Meaghan, their eight medal together on the season and narrowly missed an individual medal on tower by placing fourth.
Roseline will now prepare for the 2012 diving season and look to represent Canada at the next summer’s London Olympics.
