Michel competed in international diving meets for 12 years, earning two gold medals at the Canada Games in 1977 and having been recognized as Canadian Champion in 1976. He joined the CAMO Diving Club in 1985 and became head coach three years later. Michel has coached at the 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, and 2008 Olympic Games, at seven World Championships and at four Pan American Games.

Michel is a nine-time winner of Diving Canada’s Senior Coach of the Year award, a seven-time recipient of the Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence award, and the first recipient of the Jack Donohue Coach of the Year award in 2003.

In 2008, Michel took on the roll of National Head Coach and now travels across Canada to aid in the develop Canadian coaches and athletes.
