At four years of age, Riley McCormick was playing in a swimming pool in Victoria when he was captivated by the divers on the springboards. His father noticed his son’s interest and enrolled the young McCormick into a “Learn to Dive” program. Riley began his diving lessons despite the fact he hardly knew how to swim.

The Victoria native’s first major competition was the 2001 Canada Games in London, Ontario. At only 10 years of age, he received perfect 10’s from two judges during his first dive of the competition.

Over the past six Speedo Junior National Championships, the 17-year old has won 14 gold medals. In 2006, he set two new junior national records on 3 m and on tower in Group B (14 or 15 years). This was significant as the old records belonged to his idol Alexandre Despatie.

In 2005, this Boardworks club diver participated at the FINA Aquatic World Championships in Montreal, his first senior international competition. After a 4th place finish in 10 m synchro at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in 2006, he followed up with an 11th place finish on tower at the 2007 FINA World Aquatic Championships. This result secured Canada a second berth in the event for the 2008 Olympic Games. Also in 2007, he won his first national title on tower at the Summer Senior National Championships.

In 2008, Riley McCormick earned the right to represent Canada at the Olympic Games in Beijing and finished 16th place on 10 m.

2009 marked Riley’s freshman year with the Arizona State Sun Devils. In his debut season, Riley won silver at the NCAA Championships on tower. Nationally, Riley won gold medals at both the senior and junior national championships on tower, and went on to place 9 th in the same event at the FINA World Aquatic Championships in Rome.

Due to nagging injuries, Riley posted mixed results in 2010. Despite the setbacks, he managed to win a national championship on tower and qualified for the Commonwealth Games in India. Unfortunately a few weeks before competition, Riley was forced to withdraw due to injury.

The 2011 season saw Riley return to form. Again winning a pair of medals at the national championships, he turned in a tremendous performance at the FINA World Aquatic Championships in Shanghai. His 9 th place finish secured Canada a spot in the Men’s tower event at the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Riley has taken the 2012 year off from school to focus on preparing for the 2012 Olympics.
