Reuben Ross has always dreamt of flying. When he was a child, he wanted to become an astronaut and spent his days jumping on the trampoline in his backyard. Seeing the acrobat in him, his parents decided to enroll him in diving classes.

This Regina native, who trains and studies civil engineering at the University of Miami, has participated in the 2007 Pan-American Games and the FISU Games. In 2008 he qualified for the FINA World Cup, which started off an exceptional year for him. Thanks to his performance during this last competition, he assured a second berth for Canada at the 2008 Olympic Games on the 3 m springboard.

Also in 2008, in the presence of his friends and family in Regina, Reuben won his first senior national titles during the Winter Senior National Championships. 23 year old at the time, Reuben swept the boards, winning the 3 m, 10 m, and 10 m synchro events.

Not long after, he won the gold medal on 3 m at the Division 1 NCAA Championships. Reuben capped off his stellar season by qualifying for the Olympic Games, where we placed 16th on the 3 m and 17th on the 10 m.

For his efforts, he was named the 2008 Saskatchewan Athlete of the Year.

2009 saw a continuation of success for Reuben. Over the course of the season, he won another three (3) national championships and began diving with a new synchro partner, Alexandre Despatie. At the 2009 Canada Cup, Reuben established his place amongst the Canadian diving elite by winning his first international gold medal on 3m. Teamed with Alexandre, the pair won the bronze medal at the 2009 World Championships on 3m synchro. An incredible feat for a tandem that had just compete for the first time together a mere month before the event. To cap of his spectacular season, Reuben was name 2009 Male Athlete of the Year by Diving Plongeon Canada.

The 2010 season held mixed results for Reuben but he persevered and finsihed it off on a very possitive note, capturing two medals at the Commonwealth Games in India. He and his synchro partner, Alexandre Despatie, not only won the 3m synchro event, they place 1st and 2nd on 3m individually. 2010 was also a monumental year for Reuben Ross away from the pool as he got married during the summer.

Rueben now trains full time in Montreal with his coach Arturo Miranda and synchro partner Alexandre Despatie.

Reuben and his synchro parter Alexandre Despatie started the 2011 season off on the right foot by winning their fourth national championship together on 3 m synchro. With Alex suffering a season ending knee injury, Reuben’s attention shifted back to his individual events. After dealing with a back injury that affected his performances on the 2011 Grand Prix, Reuben returned to form and won a gold medal at the Summer Nationals in Edmonton. This result qualified him to represent Canada at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. He also posted a strong 6 th place finish on 1 m at the FINA World Aquatic Championships in Shanghai.

Reuben is currently training hard as he aims to return to the Olympic stage in London next summer.
