March 30, 2005 Diving’s Eldon Godfrey and Myriam Boileau recognized at the Canadian Sport Awards OTTAWA – Long time FINA member Eldon Godfrey and Olympian Myriam Boileau were honoured Tuesday at the Canadian Sport Awards held Toronto. Myriam Boileau who achieved her dream of competing at the Olympic Games in Athens won the Investors Group Spirit of Sport Story of the Year. Myriam made the Canadian Olympic team in 2004 for the first time after missing her qualification in 1996 by just a few points. She did not compete at the 2000 Olympic trials due to a serious back injury. “We are thrilled that the effort Myriam has put into staying in the sport that she loves has been recognized” says Tim Page Executive Director of Diving Canada. “This is a great example for others who are struggling to keep pursuing their dreams through adversity. Great things will happen.” The Spirit of Sport Story of the Year Award is to recognize and celebrate a Canadian hero who, in the pursuit of sporting excellence, has demonstrated values such as dedication, perseverance, sportsmanship, respect for others and a true love of sport in 2004. Eldon Godfrey won the Volunteer Achievement Award for his continued involvement in aquatic sports and more precisely with the sport of diving in Canada. Eldon’s positive impact over the years has been tremendous for the sport. Eldon is member of the FINA bureau and represents Canada. “We are just delighted that Eldon has finally been recognized for his decades of support towards diving and all aquatic sports in Canada” says Aquatic Federation of Canada president Linda Cuthbert. “We look forward to keep working with Eldon”. This was Eldon’s fourth nomination. -30-
