Canadians Ware, Bélanger win gold at junior international diving meet

AACHEN, Germany- Carol-Ann Ware of St-Hilaire, Que., and Éloise Bélanger of Montreal each won a gold medal and Rachel Kemp of Victoria added a bronze to highlight opening day action for Canada on Thursday at the Lambertz-Sprinhen International junior diving competition.

In the women`s one-metre for the 16-18 age group, Ware posted strong scores on her final two dives to snare the gold with 374.65 points. Marion Farissier of France was second at 358.80 and Kemp was third at 357.65.

Bélanger dominated the 15 and under women’s platform receiving 7.0’s and 8.0’s from the judges on each of her three dives in the final for 341.30 points. Svetlana Lapina of Russia was second at 293.05 and Lisa Marie Wachs of Germany third at 291.25.

Myriam Selmani of Laval, Que., was also in the final and placed sixth at 289.65.

Melissa Citrini-Beaulieu of St-Constant, Que., was fifth in the prelims but did not advance to the final due to a two per country limit. Selmani had placed second and Bélanger fourth in the prelims. Rebecca Guenette of Brossard, Que., was 12 th.

On boys 15 and under three-metre, Sam Valentine of Saskatoon was 10 th in the final while C.J. Moore of Waterloo, Ont., was 16 th in the prelims and eliminated.

Cody Yano of Edmonton and Brandon Makinson of Calgary were fifth in the boys three-metre synchro final.

Competition continues through to Sunday.
