May 9th, 2009

Carol-Ann Ware

AACHEN, Germany- Carol-Ann Ware of St-Hilaire, Que., and Rachel Kemp of Victoria finished 1-2 Saturday on women’s 10-metre tower at the the Lambertz-Sprinhen International junior diving competition.

Eloise Bélanger of Montreal added a bronze on three-metre.

On women’s tower for 16-18 year-olds, Ware collected her third gold of the competition with 419.35 points. Kemp followed at 394.30 and Viktoriya Potekhina of Russia was third at 390.45. Ware also took gold this week on one-metre and three-metre synchro with partner Sabrina Beaupré of Longueuil, Que.

“I was glad to have such a strong final after struggling in the preliminaries,” said Ware, fourth in the morning qualifying session. “My goal in the competition was to be confident and see what I was capable of doing. I had high expectations for this meet but this is actually better than I what I had hoped for.”

On girls one-metre for 14-15 age group, Elena Bertocchi of Italy won the gold medal with 338.45 points. Evgenia Selezneva of Russia was second at 336.45 and Bélanger third at 320.20. Melissa Citrini-Beaulieu of St. Constant, Que., was ninth.

“All of my dives were as good as they could be at this point in the season,” said Bélanger, now with three podium appearances this week. ‘’The one-metre is not necessarily my best event and in recent competitions I was having troubling duplicating what I was doing in practice.’’

Myriam Selmani of Laval, Que., and Rebecca Guenette of Brossard, Que., did not advance after preliminaries.

Shane Miszkiel of Victoria was ninth on men’s three-metre for the 16-18 age group and Brandon Mackinson of Calgary was 19 th.

Competition ends Sunday.
