Carol-Ann Ware

VICTORIA – In a battle of the Ware sisters, Carol-Ann Ware won the gold medal on women’s 10-metre tower with her sister Pamela second on Friday night at the 2009 Speedo Junior National Championships at Saanich Commonwealth Place.

Carol-Ann Ware, 18, totalled 460.05 points for her first career national title on tower. Pamela Ware, 16, was second at 428.50 and Rachel Kemp of Victoria third at 421.40. Close competitions between the two siblings is nothing new.

“It’s always more like we compete with each other rather than against,” said Carol-Ann Ware, who earns a ticket to the Pan Am junior championships this September in Calgary. “I’m proud that we both did so well. For me it is one of my best scores and I was happy to see at least 7.0 on all my dives.”

Pamela Ware won gold medal on Thursday on three-metre with Carol-Ann placing fourth.

On men’s three-metre, Shane Miszkiel of Victoria took the gold with 528.05 points. Marc Sabourin-Germain of Montreal was second at 506. 60 and Samuel Parent of Montreal third at 495.95.

“Overall it was pretty good,” said Miszkiel, 17, with his third career national junior crown. “I’ve developed a good list for this year and I wanted to put down a solid showing. Apart from messing up one dive I accomplished that.”

Other winners Friday for the women were Emily Schmidt of Calgary on three-metre in the 11 and under division for her second gold of the meet; and Michelle Piper-Kulak of Edmonton who broke the Canadian record in the 12-13 age group platform.

For the men, the other winners were Peter Thach Mai of Montreal on one-metre in 11 and under and Nicholas Beaupré of Montreal in the 14-15 one-metre.
