Shane Miskiel

VICTORIA – Shane Miszkiel of Victoria won his second gold medal this week at the 2009 Speedo Junior National Diving Championships on Saturday with a victory on men’s one-metre springboard.

Miszkiel, the three-meter winner on Friday, totalled 515.30 points, a meet record, for his fourth career junior national crown. Cody Yano of Edmonton was second at 510.20 and Samuel Parent of Montreal third at 484.90.

Over his 10 dives on the day, Miszkiel saw 8.0`s flash on eight of them and there was only one on which he received scores as low as 6.0.

“It was really good,” said Miszkiel, 17. “The one-metre is not an event I practiced as much as three-metre. But the biggest challenge for me today was Cody and Samuel. They dove really well and that made it very close.”

In the 14-15 age group platform final, Eloise Bélanger of Montreal won the gold medal earning 346.80 points. Myriam Selmani of Montreal was second at 331.65 and Courtney Hattie of Victoria third at 314.75.

It was a fourth career age group title for Bélanger and her first in this age group. She earned some pretty impressive scores including some 9.0`s on her forward dive and backward dive. However she said it was her reverse dive she was most happy about because she had never done it that well.

Other winners in women’s competition were Frédérique Lalonde of Montreal in 12-13 age group three-metre and Dominique Cadieux of Edmonton in the 11 and under platform.

Other winners in men’s competition were Vincent Riendeau of Pointe-Claire, Que., in the 12-13 one-metre and Nicholas Beaupré of Montreal in the 14-15 three-metre.
