QUEBEC CITY – Eric Sehn of Edmonton won the gold medal on men’s one-metre on Thursday to open the 2009 Summer Senior National Championships diving competition at Universite Laval.

Sehn, tuning up for next month’s world championships in Rome, totalled 379.05 points. François Imbeau-Dulac of St-Lazare, Que., was second at 362.80 and Samuel Parent of Montreal was third at 300.15.

‘’I thought overall it was consistent performance,’’ said Sehn, 24, with his third career national senior crown. ‘’There’s a couple of things here and there that I need to sharpen up but it is great to get this meet in just before worlds and gain some confidence.’’

At the world championships, Sehn will compete on both the one-metre and 10-metre.

Imbeau-Dulac, 18, delivered his best-ever score at a national championship.

‘’This is the kind of performance I want at every competition,’’ said Imbeau-Dulac. ‘’I didn’t make any mistakes. Usually on one-metre I struggle with a dive or two. Eric’s list right now is much more difficult than mine so I don’t think I could have done any better result-wise.’’

The four-day competition has attracted more than 70 divers from 16 clubs. Canada’s world championship team including Olympic medallists Alexandre Despatie of Laval and Emilie Heymans of St-Lambert, Que., are also scheduled to compete this weekend. Competition continues Friday with the women’s one-metre event.
