Roseline Filion

QUEBEC CITY – Roseline Filion of Laval, Que., won the gold medal on women’s 10-metre tower Sunday to conclude the Summer Nationals diving competition.

Filion, who is tuning up for next month’s world championships in Rome, totalled 345.30 points for her second Canadian crown this year after winning tower at Winter Nationals this past January. Meaghan Benfeito of Montreal was second at 332.20 and Carol-Ann Ware of St-Hilaire, Que., third at 307.65.

“My second dive gave me trouble today but I was able to keep my concentration and finish strong,” said Filion. “It was my last competition before the world championships and I really wanted to give everything I had. I was particularly pleased how my entries improved.”

In a close men’s three-metre, François Imbeau-Dulac of St-Lazare, Que., won his first national title in the event with 404.90 points. Eric Sehn of Edmonton, who was going for a golden sweep of all three individual events, took second at 396.20 and Maxime Morneau-Ricard of Quebec City was third at 361.90.

‘’There were some dives that weren’t up to par but I was able to bounce back each time,’’ said Imbeau-Dulac. ‘’My last dive didn’t go well in the preliminaries and before the final I practiced it as much as I could for the two hours between the prelims and final. That really paid off.’’

On women’s three-metre synchro, Jennifer Abel of Laval and Melanie Rinaldi of Montreal, Canada’s world championship entry, took the gold with 311.70, their best score this season. Emma Friesen of Kitchener, Ont., and Lacey Truelove of London, Ont., were second.

‘’We weren’t too focused on what our score would be but it turned out well,’’ said Abel. ‘’We wanted to see an improvement in the technical elements which gave us trouble at our last meet. Individually we dove well and we really need to polish up our synchronization.’’

Sehn and Pamela Ware of St-Hilaire received the Bev Boys Award as the top male and female divers of the competition. Sehn also won gold on one and 10-metre this weekend while Ware was third on three-metre, fourth on tower and fifth on one-metre.
