Montreal, July 2nd 2010 – As a result of the incredible performances of Canadian divers at the Summer Senior National Championships in Saskatoon, which doubled as the trials event for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Diving Canada is proud to present the 11 divers that will wear the Maple Leaf in Delhi, India, from October 3rd to 14th.
Divers who punched their tickets to Dehli last week-end include; Alexandre Despatie (Laval, QC), Reuben Ross (Regina, SK), Emilie Heymans (St-Lambert, QC) Jennifer Abel (Laval, QC), Meaghan Benfeito (Montreal, QC), Roseline Filion (Laval, QC), Eric Sehn (Edmonton, AB), Riley McCormick (Victoria, BC), Kevin Geyson (Winnipeg, MB), Carol-Ann Ware and Pamela Ware ( Otterburn Park, QC).
Scott Cranham, Diving Canada's high performance director expect a lot from the team : "Based on the outstanding performances we saw in Saskatoon, we have a strong team selected for Dehli. The group is comprised of an experienced core of veterans that will help lead the up and comers at the Commonwealth Games."
Canadian hopes
Recognized as a world leading nation in diving, Canada is a serious medal contender at the Commonwealth Games. Fierce opposition will be presented by divers from Australia and Great Britain. Cranham is confident in the team's ability to compete: "Out of a possible 30 medal opportunities in India, our goal is to reach one third of that mark."
Commonwealth impact
The 1998 Commonwealth Games in Malaysia will always be remembered for the moment the world discovered Alexandre Despatie. Winning a gold medal at only 13 years of age, Despatie stepped out of the shadows to show everyone that he was an athlete to watch for years to come. Twelve years later, Mitch Geller, chief technical officer at Diving Canada, still sees the Commonwealth Games as a great opportunity for all Canadian divers: "The Commonwealth Games allows us to send more athletes per event than any other major multi sport event in the world. This is key to helping our veterans stay sharp in competition. It also grants our younger athletes the opportunity to experience major games and in turn prepares them for future World Aquatic Championships and Olympic Games."
