SASKATOON – Jennifer Abel of Laval, Que., Eric Sehn of Edmonton, and Meaghan Benfeito of Montreal all earned a second gold medal on Sunday to conclude the Summer Nationals and Commonwealth Games Trials diving competition.

On men’s 10-metre tower, Sehn posted a personal best score 494.15 points for his second gold medal of the competition.  The 25-year-old repeated his exploit from last year’s summer nationals with victories on one-metre and tower.

Riley McCormick of Victoria, the winter nationals champion, was second at 466.00 and Kevin Geyson of Winnipeg third at 460.80.

‘’It went better than I could had ever expected,’’ said Sehn, of his tower performance on Sunday.  ‘’I just wanted to go in and stay focused and repeat what I did in the preliminaries (on Friday).  I wound up doing even a little better.  Riley and Kevin were really diving well and that pressure on me made me be a better diver today.’’

On women’s three-metre, Abel collected her first individual three-metre Canadian crown with 357.75.  She beat three-time Olympic medalist and world championship silver medallist Emilie Heymans of St-Lambert Que., second at 329.60. Pamela Ware of Montreal was third at 302.50.

On women’s 10-metre synchro, Benfeito and Roseline Filion took the gold with 328.56 points.  It was Benfeito’s second gold after taking the 10-metre individual event on Saturday.  Sisters Carol-Ann Ware and Pamela Ware of Montreal were second at 298.17 and Laurence Vallée and Éloise Bélanger, both of Montreal, were third at 275.82.

‘’We gained a lot of confidence by scoring big marks on our opening dive,’’ said Filion, a  bronze medallist earlier this month with her partner at the FINA World Cup in China.  ‘’It was a dive that had hurt us a bit at the World Cup and this time our timing was much better.’’

Other winners this weekend for the women were Jo-Annie Dubois of Quebec City on one-metre,  For the men other winners this week were Alexandre Despatie of Laval on three-metre and three-metre synchro with Reuben Ross of Regina.

The competition was also a selection meet for the Commonwealth Games this October in India.
