SINGAPORE –Liu Tian led China to a 1-2 finish with 406.95 points while Wei Ying took the silver at 404.05. Ware, 17, stayed close to the leaders totalling 398.15. Last month at the Youth Olympics in Singapore, Ware re-injured her shoulder and wasn't sure how she would fare on Thursday.
"I didn't put too many expectations on myself for this competition," said Ware, who won four medals at the Pan Am Junior championships last year. "But the shoulder reacted well to the treatment I've been getting and I only started to feel some pain near the end. I'm confident I can compete in my other three events this week."
In the four-dive final, Ware received mixed reviewed on her third dive, the reverse twister. However she finished strong scoring 7.5's and 8.0's for her reverse one and a half. She was fourth after the preliminaries.
"I made a few mistakes in the prelims so I was pleased to have a strong final," said Ware. "I wasn't nervous for the final, I just tried to approach it as a normal competition."
Jo-Annie Dubois of Gatineau, Que., also made the final and placed 11th in her world junior debut.
In the girls 14-15 platform final, Lan Yi of China took the gold with Brittany Broben of Australia second and Samantha Bromberg of the U.S., third.
Taylor Olanski of London, Ont., reached the final and placed 11th. Monica Gavaris of Montreal was 19th.
"I was pretty nervous in the final and didn't do as well as I would have hoped," said Olanski, fourth in the preliminaries. "My first dive in the final went very well, but I blew my second one and that really knocked me down in the standings. I'll need to work on dealing with the nervousness better."
In men's three-metre synchro, Nicholas Beaupré of Longueuil, Que., and Marc Sabourin-Germain of Mascouche, Que., were 11th. It was their first competition together.
''It was pretty stressful,'' said Beaupré. ''Our synchronization was pretty solid but we struggled more with our individual dives. The big challenge was to stay calm throughout the competition.''
About the FINA World Junior Championships
The world will be introduced to some of the next generation of diving greats at the 18th edition of the FINA World Junior Diving Championships, taking place from September 1-6, 2010, in Tucson, Ari. (USA).
Some 180 divers, with a slightly higher number of female competitors, coming from 29 countries, will either make their debut or re-affirm their place among the world's best on the boards of the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center – Kasser Family Pool, University of Arizona.
Boys and girls compete in both "A" (born 1990/1991/1992) and "B" (born 1993/1994) age groups. This competition, organised in even years, comprises 14 events: 1m, 3m springboard and 10m platform for A and B as well as a 3m springboard synchro event mixing A and B.
In the last edition in Aachen (GER), China blitzed to win all but one title (earned by Russia) on offer. Competition will most certainly be tough, as Australia, Germany, Great Britain, Ukraine, USA and Russia also have strong contenders to claim a podium spot.
Since the 2008 edition, a sixth day was added to the competition, following the ever-growing number of divers participating in the event.
