ETOBICOKE - Brandon Makinson and Cody Kolodziejzyk of Calgary won the gold medal on men’s three-metre synchro on Thursday to open the 2010 Winter Senior National Diving Championships at the Etobicoke Olympium. Makinson and Kolodziejzyk totalled 350.94 points for their third straight national crown. Riley McCormick and Shane Miszkiel of Victoria were second at 347.31 and C.J. Moore and Brett Gillis of Kitchener, Ont., were third at 306.36. “It wasn’t as strong as last year’s performance but considering we haven’t dove together in so long we did pretty well,” said Kolodziejzyk. “We arrived from our universities only two days ago so we didn’t have much time to practice together. It shows we have good chemistry and we’re having a lot of fun” Those practices hadn’t been particularly encouraging. “We were having trouble with our synchro so I’m glad it all came together,” said Makinson. “Our timing had been off in practice.” In the women’s 10-metre tower preliminaries, two-time defending national champion Roseline Filion of Montreal holds the lead at 325.00 followed closely by Rachel Kemp of Victoria at 324.80 and Pamela Ware of Montreal in third at 322.25. “I was pleased with my consistency,” said Filion, 22, a double medallist on the Grand Prix circuit last season. “It shows my training is going well. I’ve kept the same diving list as last year because I feel I’m still working on improving the quality of the dives.” In the men’s three-metre prelims, Reuben Ross of Regina is first at 408.35 with François Imbeau-Dulac of Montreal second at 402.60 and Eric Sehn of Edmonton third at 394.70. The women’s tower and men’s three-metre semifinals and finals are all on Saturday. Competition continues Friday with the women’s three-metre prelims at noon, the men’s tower prelims at 2:30 p.m. and the women’s three-metre synchro final at 4 p.m. For more information visit: www.diving.ca Thursday’s leading results at the Winter Nationals diving competition in Etobicoke, Ont.
