Pamela Ware

GUADALAJARA, Mexico- Pamela Ware of Otterburn Park, Que., finished second on women’s 10-metre tower on Friday to earn a spot on the Canadian diving team for the inaugural Youth Olympic Games.  At this weekend’s qualifying event a top-nine finish was needed to earn a spot for the Games set for August 14-26 in Singapore.

Pande Lela Rinong of Malaysia placed first on women’s tower, Ware, also second in the preliminaries, followed and Annika Lenz of the U.S., was third.

“I’m really excited about making this team, it was a big goal for me this year,” said Ware, 17, a quadruple medallist at the Pan Am junior championships last year.  “In prelims, I messed up my compulsories but I came back strong after that.  The highlight for me was nailing my reverse two and half in both preliminaries and the final.  It’s usually my best dive.”

Ware performed well on her new dive, an inward two and a half, which she is also learning for the synchro event and her back armstand triple which had been giving her trouble in practice this week.

“I had a lot of trouble all week holding my armstand but tonight it went very well,” she said.

Ware will compete on Saturday in the three-metre event.

Also on Friday, Nicholas Beaupré of Longueuil, Que., was 11th on men’s three-metre and did not qualify for the Games.
