SINGAPORE – Pamela Ware of Montreal battled through pain to finish eighth on women's 10-metre tower on Saturday in diving action at the inaugural Youth Olympics.

Ware, 17, re-injured her shoulder in training on Monday and her practices had been modified all week. Still each dive in Saturday's preliminaries and final reminded her of the injury.

"I was particularly worried about the shoulder in the preliminaries, because we do more dives," said Ware, seventh in the event at the last world junior championships in 2008. "I was happy with my performance today and how I battled through it."

Jiao Liu of China won the gold medal with 479.60 points, Pandelela Pamg of Malaysia was second at 454.35 and Hyang Sin Ji of South Korea third at 430.20. Ware totalled 373.05.

"Pam had a great practice session just before the final and we were really optimistic," said Ware's coach Aaron Dziver of Montreal. "Her second and third dives however have been inconsistent and she over rotated both. That deflated her a bit. We know (fully healthy), the result could have been different."

Ware will compete again on Monday on three-metre in which she is considered another medal potential.

On Sunday, Marc Sabourin-Germain of Mascouche, Que., competes on men's three-metre,
